20010516 Fizz Fizz

I'm getting addicted to Dr. Pepper. For the last three days, I have been drinking it. For those who don't know, that's a cola drink with a slight pepper taste. I've travelled quite a bit and I know that soft drinks around the world are as varied as the people. In Japan, there is "Calpis Water," which is pronounced "karupiss wotaa." When I was there, I was addicted to it. I have a red, white, and blue cola pop can with Arabic writing on it; I brought it from my Egyptian excursion. I looked up the Arabic letters and they spell "Sahara." I don't really remember how it tasted. The can design looks like Pepsi.

Anyway, besides Dr. Pepper, I like root beer. Yesterday, I was in a Chinese restaurant where I am a regular customer and I asked for root beer; the waitress came back with two brands of alcoholic beer, asking me to choose which one I wanted. I said, "No, I want ROOT beer, the soft drink." It seemed as though she was frustrated at not being able to understand. I then told another waitress that I wanted root beer; she knew it and came back with my drink. The first waitress came back and said "Sorry"; I said, "That's okay. Now you know where the root beer is." I spelled it for her: "R-O-O-T." She gestured the spelling on the table and said "Thank you." That's not the first time that a waitress in a Chinese restaurant has never heard of root beer. Maybe, root beer is not popular in Hongkong.
